A Level Course Information

The GCE Advanced Level examination is an internationally recognised examination set by the Ministry of Education, Singapore and University of Cambridge International Examinations, United Kingdom. The results scored for this examination is often used by students to gain entry to various universities and tertiary institutions of many countries. Students who have taken the course will be equipped to organise and analyse data, facts and information. They tend to be creative and think critically on a given topic.

Students enrolled for the A level Preparatory Course will take the examination as a private candidate.

For local Singapore university entry, students have to take General Paper and Mother Tongue, students have to take 3 H2 subjects and 1 H1 subject. The terms “H1” and “H2” indicate the level of difficulty for a particular subject where “H2” indicates a more difficult level.

The average teacher-student ratio is 1:4 to 9, to make learning effective. Students here are given quality attention by teachers due to the small group size.

1) Course Duration:

Duration: 14 Jan 2019 – 17 Nov 2019
Full-time: 3 hours x 5 days x 10 months. Total contact hours: 400 hours. (Full-time course is subject to availability)
Part-time: 3 hours x 2 days x 10 months. Total contact hours: 120 hours.

Year Calendar

Students will come in during the time slots for their individual modules.

2) Course entry requirement(s)

• The student must have 10 years of formal education or high school / secondary education.

• The student must be at least 17 years old on Jan 1st of the year of examination.

• English language requirement of minimum C6 in GCE ‘O’ Level English or 5.5 score in IELTS or equivalent

3) Course learning outcome(s)

Students will be introduced or learn about the content of selected subjects according to the syllabi set by Ministry of Education in preparation for the Singapore-Cambridge GCE Advanced Levels examinations in November – December.

4) Modules:

Students have a choice of the following possible subject combination choices. The approval of any other subject combination is at the sole discretion of the Centre. See subject pre-requisites. Module synopsis available here.

H1 Mathematics: Minimum C for GCE ‘O’ Level Mathematics OR equivalent

H2 Mathematics: Sat for GCE ‘O’ Level Additional Mathematics OR equivalent

H1/H2 Literature & H2 English Language & Linguistics: Minimum C in GCE ‘O’ Level English and/or pass in GCE ‘O’ Level Literature OR equivalent.

H1/H2 History: Minimum B in GCE ‘O’ Level English and/or pass in GCE ‘O’ Level History/Elective History.

5) Examination and/or other assessment period

Internal Assessments:

English and Mathematics Placement Tests (first day) and written tests and prelim exams in September

External Examination: The Singapore-Cambridge General Certificate of Education (Advanced Level) Examination in November – December.

6) Expected examination results release date

Results are released usually in March the following year of the examination.

7) Course Completion

Students must attain a minimum of 75% attendance to complete the A level course.

1. Is it necessary to prepare for the GCE A level examinations?

Yes. As A level private candidate students will have to take a number of subjects and undertake the examinations, it is crucial adequate preparation is done before the actual examination. Local students in junior colleges usually take 2 years to complete the GCE A level course, and this course is completed within 1 year, so it is very intensive.

2. Who accredits the GCE A level examination?

It is accredited by the Ministry of Education and the University of Cambridge International Examinations. You may visit the website http://www.seab.gov.sg/ to find out more how you can register as an A level private candidate.

3. When must I register for the A level examination as a private candidate?

Students are required to register for the A level examination in March the same year they will be taking their examination.

4. Where is the examination held?

As you will be registered as a private candidate, the Ministry of Education will usually arrange for you to sit your examination at an examination near your education centre or home. Details of the actual venue will be provided nearer the date of the examination.

5. How many subjects must I take during the A level examination?

Student who are aiming for local university entry (eg. NUS, NTU, SMU) are required to take General Paper, Mother Tongue (if not exempted), 3 H2 subjects and 1 H1 subject (of which there needs to be at least 1 contrasting subject). Students who are aiming for overseas universities will need to check the university and course entry requirements first. Usually there needs to be a minimum of 2 GCE A Level subjects taken in one sitting.

6. Who can sit for the A level examination?

You must be at least aged 17 on Jan 1st of the year of examination.

7. Why should I take the A level examination?

As the GCE A level is an internationally recognised examination, the results you get can be used to enter most universities or institutions of higher learning. Students who have completed the A level examination in Singapore have a variety of options. They may further their studies locally or abroad. Students may enrol into the University of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University of Singapore, Singapore Management University, Singapore University of Social Sciences, Singapore University of Technology and Design or the Singapore Institute of Management. Students also have the option of studying abroad or pursue a correspondence degree with one of the institutions of education in Singapore. Doing well in the A level examination is a stepping stone for you to a brighter future.

8. How will I know my results?

The results of the A level examination will be released about 3 months after the entire examination is over. The Ministry of Education will usually announce the actual date of release a few days in advance. The date of release will be reported in the news. In addition, students will also be informed of their results via mail to their Singapore residence.

9. What should I do after my A level examination?

This depends on the results you get for the examination. You will have more options of what kind of education you wish to pursue if you do well. Our teachers and staff will be present to advise students on their options for tertiary education after they have received their results.
